Mom Bloggers You Should Know: Mommy is Teething

Name:  Tina F.

Age:  28

Location:  Woodland Hills, CA

Blog Address:  www.theteethingmom.com

What made you decide to start blogging? I needed an outlet to puke out the toxic emotional build-up that inevitably comes with being a first time mom, and Facebook wasn't cutting it.  I'd post snarky status updates about motherhood  almost everyday and got ignored a lot, and I was in need of somebody, anybody, who'd talk to me and somehow relate to the shitty stuff I've been going through as a new mom.

Mom Bloggers You Should Know: We Laugh Until You Cry

When did you decide you wanted to start blogging seriously and why?

I started my blog when I was pregnant with my son because I wanted to keep a journal of sorts. About eight months after he was born I found out that I was not being rehired as a music teacher at the elementary school I was at, and that was a turning point in my blogging. The trials and tribulations of becoming an unemployed, non-voluntary SAHM were powerful and I used my blog as a form of therapy, as a way of connecting with people since I would be losing out on having “colleagues” and as a way to document it all. I’ve been an active, growing blogger ever since.

Between everything going on in your life where do you find the time to blog?

I just make it work. A few minutes here and there, when I first get up in the morning, nap time, at night while my husband watches television. It is something I love to do, so I make it work.

What do you think sets your blog apart from the rest?

Well I would never claim to be superior because... well I am not. What I love about my blog, though, is how honest I can be there. I don’t hold anything back, and whether it is good or bad, I love sharing everything openly.

Being the successful blogger that you are what are some tips that you can share with the newer members of the mom blogging community on getting traffic and not getting burned out?

Be consistent. Whether you post five days a week or once a week, do it regularly. Visit other blogs, leave comments, get involved in conversation. Make sure people can reach you (don’t have a “no-reply” email address - that is so frustrating!) and that you respond when they do. Be honest, real and say what is on your mind. Most of all, remember that your blog is YOUR space. Yes, having comments and visitors and followers are nice, but ultimately you started your blog for you!

There are so many things that you put out there about yourself when you do a blog. Are there subjects that you keep off limits strictly for those closest to you?

Well, I don’t talk about religion. It is such a touchy subject, and the fact of the matter is that I don’t even know where I stand on it. It just isn’t something I discuss with anyone, online or in life. Politics is also something I don’t discuss - this is for personal reasons, though. There are some people in my life who have a “my way or the highway” mentality when it comes to politics and I don’t dare get myself caught up in that mess.

Looking forward where do you see yourself and your blog going in the next few years?

I am definitely looking forward to it! I have been growing very steadily over the past 18 months or so and I am definitely hoping that will continue. I love doing an occasional review or giveaway because supporting each other is magnificent, and I love writing about the adventures my family endure. One of my favorite things to do is to get “lost” in my blog and read through old posts and look at older pictures just to reminisce - I can’t imagine the joy I will find in doing that in the future!

Mom Bloggers You Should Know: A Bloggy Mom

When did you decide you wanted to start blogging seriously and why?

Technically, I’ve been blogging since 1996… though the term was not yet around. I was 16 years old and my parents had just purchased out first computer. I was immediately drawn to sites such as angelfire/tripod {I don’t recall which I used first} where I could set up and publish my own site and content. I had a lot to say and enjoyed logging my life, thoughts, ideas and opinions.

Between everything going on in your life where do you find the time to blog?

Good question! The five minutes I find here and there throughout the day are what add up to my blogging/online time.

What do you think sets your blog(s) apart from the rest?

I really couldn’t tell you, except that no one else is uniquely me, living my life or having had my past. I think being able to tell your story is what makes the difference.

Being the successful blogger that you are what are some tips that you can share with the newer members of the mom blogging community on getting traffic and not getting burned out?

If you want to build your blog following, first you must write unique content. Yes we’re all moms blogging about motherhood, but no one has exactly your life or daily stories. No one else is uniquely you.

Next, be approachable and make connections. Visit other blogs and get to know other moms.

It can be very difficult to keep from getting burned-out. You feel pressure to network, network, network. Do everything at your own pace and at a pace that doesn’t take from your time and energy for your family.

There are so many things that you put out there about yourself when you do a blog. Are there subjects that you keep off limits strictly for those closest to you?

I do not publish pictures of my children on any of my blogs or Bloggy Moms. I am also very selective on what I share about them, my husband and my extended family. Everyone needs to find their own level of comfort in what they share about themselves on their blogs. Keep in mind, the world is watching {or has the ability to do so}.

Looking forward where do you see yourself and your blog going in the next few years?

I hope to continue in providing community and support for mommy bloggers and hopefully provide a little humor along the way.

When did you decide you wanted to start blogging seriously and why?

I just had my two year anniversary (I think we call it blogaversary?) and I started it because I am a writer. I've been a published writer since i was 14 and even though I can't stand the term "Blogger", I realized that freelance writing for magazines wasn't enough. I needed my own magazine. I needed complete control over my content because I have pretty extreme content (I use bad words. A LOT.)

Mom Bloggers You Should Know: Bacon is My Enemy

Name: Giyen Kim

Age: 36

Location: Vashon Island, Washington

When did you decide you wanted to start blogging seriously and why?

I started blogging in 2008 after I quit my job that I had been working for the last 7 years. I was originally using my blog to work through and express my anxiety about this great juncture of my life, but ultimately it became part of my identity and who I am. I am serious about it because I love blogging. I didn't truly understand whole "blogging for income" part of it until Rob Morhaim, the former Executive Producer of Momversation, asked me to be one of the panelists. That pretty much catapulted me past the "dear diary" phase and I started looking at it as a means to make a part time income.

Deal Wise Mommy Has Something to Say

After the onslaught of comments from Monday's post of Mom Bloggers you should know. Anne from Deal Wise Mommy has asked me to include the following information pertaining to the blog that copied her.

Comment Firestorm

I would just like to start out by saying when I chose Deal Wise Mommy to do an interview with it was based on a few things the fact that I actually like her site, her design, her content and that she has made a name for her self doing something that she enjoys which has made her very successful.

I was not expecting the firestorm of comments that occurred. Now that being said no matter if the comments are good, bad or indifferent I don't believe in censoring peoples thoughts even if I don't agree with them so I will leave it open for whatever it is you want to say but please keep in mind that the comments written are opinions of the people writing them.

I just want to send a big Thank You to Anne for taking the time to answer my questions and to tell her keep up the good work and as long as they are talking about you your doing something right.
