Mr. Independent: Coping with My Child's Growing Independence

Daylan turned 3 only a few weeks ago and it’s as if he has totally come into his own and doesn’t really need me as much anymore. Every single day he becomes more and more independent telling me “Mommy just walk away…I can do it”. It’s crazy because it seems like just yesterday that I as telling my mom I can’t wait until he can walk and talk because babies sure are boring.

Now it is three years later and he is doing far more then walking and talking. He is busy bossing people around, dressing by himself and even fully potty trained. Funny thing is I sometimes want my baby back I want to be able to just hold him in my arms and rock him back and forth.

Now days he is so busy moving I can barely even get a hug and a kiss. But there are some days, very few and far between that he comes to me and says “Mommy I wanna be a baby” on those days I scoop him up in my arms and I pretend that he is in fact my little blanket baby. He of course will always be my baby but he won’t always be small enough for me to hold and rock. Thinking about this makes me remember the book Love You Forever by Robert Munsch.

“I’ll love you forever,
I’ll like you for always,
as long as I’m living

my baby you’ll be.”

Does anyone else get a little sad as their kids get older and began to be less and less reliant on you for all of their needs?

I can't read that darn book w/o crying!! On Mother's day, the singer made it into a song and put a 21st centruy spin on it-darn those people!!! Every mama was crying- WTH?!

Anyway, I am very sad my dudes are growing so quickly. My oldest turns 12 in 2 months-I'm going to cry just typing that. I just want to stop time for a little while- like forever!!!

Crystal,

I bought the book back when I was pregnant and tried to read it to my son twice and I have never been able to read it all the way through without breaking down into tears. He would look at me and say mommy whats wrong are you hurt?

Oh, I hear ya. I'm that mom sneaking into my older child's room rocking them to sleep. LOL Tonight I get to hang out w/ my daughter in her dorm because she's in the cities and we're going to a conference together. Maybe I'll grab her up in the middle of the night and rock her. LOL

Mimi,

You should and have someone take a picture. I am sure it would get quite a response....LOL I am still able to go into my son's room at night and scoop him up no problem. Sometimes when he is awake Ill ask him if he wants to be my baby and occasionally he will say yes and let me carry him like a baby. He thinks its funny.

I can really relate to this post - My 4 are all growing up so fast. My youngest turned 3 in August but there is a major difference between her and the boys - when the boys got independent they were off like a shot - and while she does too - she is constantly handing out the hugs and kisses.
