When did you decide you wanted to start blogging seriously and why?
I started blogging in 2008 because I had a bunch of friends who were blogging and it seemed like a fun thing to do. I started getting more serious about it when we moved from Pittsburgh, PA to Nashville, TN to keep up with friends and family that I don't get to see as often. It has evolved away from a strictly parenting and medical issues blog into more of a lifestyle blog featuring food, clothes, travel and family. Blogging forced me to start writing and it allows me to be a little snarky without directing it any anyone in particular.
Between everything going on in your life where do you find the time to blog?
I have such a busy schedule as a full time wife, mom and pediatrician. I tend to wake up early to blog or I write on my day off. I usually will write a week's worth of posts at one sitting.
What do you think sets your blog apart from the rest?
Me! Seriously though, I love to blog about clothes and entertaining. I think my sense of humor sets me apart and of course, I have the perspective of being a physician.
Being the successful blogger that you are what are some tips that you can share with the newer members of the mom blogging community on getting traffic and not getting burned out?
I am not sure I would qualify myself as a "successful blogger" but I would offer the same advice as I would to anyone who is a writer. Blog about what you love to do and the ideas will come. Worst case scenario, blog about what you are struggling with or are passionate about. I tend to find the most vocal responses are when I write about real issues. Don't be afraid to step away from the blog. Your faithful readers will continue to read even if you don't write for a while. Comment, comment, comment on others' blogs. Blogger are like Tinkerbell; we can't live without applause (or comments, as the case may be). Some of my favorite blogging relationships were started by randomly commenting on something on Twitter or on posts.
There are so many things that you put out there about yourself when you do a blog. Are there subjects that you keep off limits strictly for those closest to you?
I have not and will never blog about my husband beyond superficial things like clothes or travel. I believe there are things that need to stay within the bonds of marriage and quite frankly isn't anyone else's business. I tend not to blog about politics or religion, although I hope that my beliefs are apparent in how I write.
Looking forward where do you see yourself and your blog going in the next few years?
